About the Debaters
A.U. Nunnery was born in Benton County, Tennessee near Camden on August 22, 1873. His parents died when he was five or six years old. After their death, he was carried to Henderson County and then to Decatur County, where he spent most of his life. During his boyhood days he lived about three miles south of Cedar Hill. His brother, Alonzo, was a preacher and publisher. On October 18, 1896, he was licensed to preach by the Baptist denomination and was ordained on August 8, 1897. He pastored close to one hundred Baptist churches, from three to eight at the same time, and baptized thousands of people. He had around forty debates, meeting with men such as I.B. Bradley, E.M. Borden, Claude Cayce, N.V. Parker, Joe L. Netherland and others.

Guy N. Woods was born in 1908 in Vardeman MS, baptized into Christ in 1926, preaching his first sermon the next month. He preached in TN, KY, and TX in local works, but spent many years as an evangelist, and held more debates than any other preacher of the Gospel in his time. He was a noted lecturer, a great Bible scholar, and a prolific writer. He authored adult Bible study comments on all parts of the Bible, Commentary on the Books of John, Peter, James and Jude, The Second Coming of Christ, Will We Know Each Other In Heaven? Biblical Background of the Troubled Middle East, A Self-Teaching Text on New Testament Greek, Questions and Answers (2 Vols.), Notes on Johnson's Commentary and other works. He was very clear and concise in his presentations, and was well known for his ability to answer religious questions in public discussions. For other thirty years he conducted the Open Forum at the annual Freed Hardeman University Bible Lectureship. Woods died December 8, 1993.
