T he most popular modern use of the Old Testament prophets is for “predicting” the end of time before Jesus comes again. In contrast, the early church used the prophets to prophesy of the Messiah’s first coming. There is another good use of the prophets which has been neglected: an ethical relevance to modern society. The prophets had a message concerning the political, international, and social problems of the prophets’ contemporaries. That message is still relevant for similar problems today.
These lectures on which this book is based were given first at Freed-Hardeman University.
Clyde Woods, Distinguished Professor of Bible at Freed-Hardeman University, says, “It is always good to see a new book from Dr. Lewis’ pen. An acknowledged authority on the prophets, he provides his usual thoroughness and keen insight for this succinct treatment of their ethical themes. The book should prove very helpful.”
Rolland Pack, Dean of the Honors College at Freed-Hardeman University, one who is knowledgable of current scholarship in the field of ethics, says of the book: “Outstanding familiarity with the languages and cultures of the biblical world provides Lewis a useful lens to examine moral claims of the Old Testament prophets.”
